Combining heritage with the artistry of modern winemaking

Simon van der Stel, born on October 14, 1639, laid the foundation for the Cape’s wine industry, which has become renowned worldwide. His passion for viticulture and dedication to quality continue to inspire our family. As the youngest blood relative, I wish to honor his legacy by producing a wine that reflects both our heritage and the artistry of modern winemaking.

When 17th-century Dutch sailors needed sturdy yellowwood to repair their ships, they turned to Hout Bay’s forests. Centuries later, Dutch shipbuilder Scheepswerf Boer completed the circle by toasting their 100th anniversary with a wine from Hout Bay’s own Vineyard.

The choice was beautifully symbolic: the same valley that once supplied timber for VOC ships now produces award-winning wines. That celebratory bottle wasn’t just a drink—it was a tribute to Hout Bay’s enduring connection to Dutch maritime history, where towering trees built empires and sun-kissed vineyards now tell the story.

As the youngest descendant of Simon van der Stel, the esteemed first Governor of the Dutch Cape Colony and a pioneer in viticulture, we are excited to present a unique wine brand, Dionysian Legacy.

This wine pays homage to our ancestral roots and the legacy of winemaking that has flourished in the Cape region for over three centuries, Our goal is to create a premium wine that embodies the spirit of innovation, tradition, and excellence.
